UPS Embraces Age of Technology

UPS is definitely a respectable and “one of a kind”company. It started as a small and simple company with the purpose of delivering limited packages in Seattle and has grown into a huge company, moving 13 million packages daily. It has thrived powerfully for over a century already. Along with its growing success, it has embraced the world of technology that continuously grows as well. The company’s ability to adapt to the current resources, that can contribute for the development and success of the business such as high-tech technology, has been its key reason to the establishment of its long-term success. The use of advanced technology certainly played a big part for UPS to prosper year after year. Its investment of the computer technology is a wise strategy that made it ahead of other companies.

The world of today is becoming more and more competitive each day. UPS also plays its part in the competition. Since the company specializes in delivering packages to various places, different parts of its business have been automated, with the internet having its main role in the business operation. For instance, they make use of the electronic tracking device called the “DIAD” to track its shipment of the packages. This absolutely saves the company time and costs in terms of the shipment of packages because it can track immediately and accurately the destination of the customer. The use of technology also attracts more customers because they can conveniently pay and get the product that they ordered quickly. Thus, generating huge sales and profit for the company – developing its competitive advantage above other companies.

UPS is a great model of business success to other companies and even to huge industries. The different industries can follow the strategy that the company used in order for its business to become at the top of the game. Perhaps, industries could invest also on purchasing computer technology and equipment designed for the advantage of their particular businesses. For instance, an industry specializing in fashion, can make use of the internet in launching a particular line worldwide. It can also use equipments created to make “coutures” or dresses in the fastest way possible.

If I were the CEO of FedEx (another shipping company), I will invest some of the business’ capital in purchasing and implementing the latest and perhaps more efficient technology than the ones being used by UPS. I will also buy devices that will make shipping of the packages accurate and timely. These strategies will absolutely strengthen and position my business ahead of UPS and other companies within the industry.
